One-on-one cello instruction for kids, teens, and adults at The Arlington School of Music — in person at our downtown Arlington Heights studio or online.
Cello students at The Arlington School of Music work with Donald Mead, an expert instructor of cello, piano, and pipe organ. Lessons develop the foundations the instrument demands — posture, left-hand frame, bow control, and the rich tone the cello is loved for.
Beginners learn proper setup and simple melodies on appropriately sized instruments; advancing students work on shifting, vibrato, repertoire, and preparation for school orchestra seating, youth symphony auditions, and solo festivals.
We have taught string players in Arlington Heights and the surrounding Northwest Suburbs since 1930, with in-person lessons at our downtown studio and online options for busy families.

What size cello does my child need?›
Cellos come in fractional sizes (1/8 through full size) based on the student's height and arm length. Your teacher will size your child at the first lesson; most families rent until the student reaches full size.
What age can a child start cello?›
Around ages 6–9 is common with a fractional-size instrument, though older beginners — including adults — do very well on cello.
Can lessons help my child move up in school orchestra?›
Yes. Private lessons are the fastest path to better seating — we work on audition excerpts, tone, and technique targeted to your school's program.
Do you offer online cello lessons?›
